April 28th, 2024 Cold Process Soap 101 This hands-on class will guide participants through the art and science of handmade cold process soap making. Participants will learn the basics of creating natural, nourishing soaps using a combination of coconut oil, palm oil, shea butter, and castor oil. Basic understanding of the fatty acid profiles of different oils to mastering the saponification process, students will gain the skills to craft their own soap creations using two given recipes - a basic recipe and a butter recipe. In-depth fatty acid profiles and lye calculators WILL NOT BE TAUGHT (in this class). You will take home a 1 pound 8 ounce wooden soap box with silicone liner, and a milk carton with approximately 1 pound 8 ounces of soap, two cold process recipes, and a hand out of the basic process of cold process soap making. Soap equipment, molds, scientific scales, safety face shields or goggles, latex gloves (if you are allergic to latex, please bring your own gloves), raw materials (oils, scents), exfoliants/additives will be provided. Colorants WILL NOT BE TAUGHT (in this class). • Understand the fundamental principles of soap making/a small bit of history • Master the saponification process and how to safely handle lye • Gain practical experience in handcrafted soap making - cold process • Explore adding scents (essential oil and frgrance oil), and exfoliants to soap creations. • Mixing oils and lye solution/Temperature precautions/Trace/Seize/Acceleration :) • Molding/Pouring tips • Proper curing techniques and duration • How to use a scientific scale • IFRA guidelines and thier importance
